How to make the most of meetings

What an illuminating meeting we just had! But what was that critical point the partner mentioned? We didn’t write it down, so we will have to rehash everything again.

I have three distinct categories of notes:

  • Action items, including milestones, follow ups, who’s working on what
  • Knowledge notes that include facts and experiences
  • Personal memos that include networking and casual conversations

For me these three types of notes mean jotting down things like:

  • Key discussion items including status and points of view
  • Soft talk that creates rapport and personal connection
  • Participation of different attendees that point to skills and expertise
  • Outlier threads not on the agenda yet important ideas and insights
  • Off-the-record remarks that can be somewhat confidential info

When I am mindful of these aspects, I get more value and productivity from meetings.
